How can IoT monitor air quality in Towns and Cities?

Worldwide, people are becoming more concerned with air quality conditions as pollution is becoming widely recognised as a severe risk to the public’s health.

The importance of cities monitoring and acting on air quality is made apparent from the substantial number of illnesses and deaths caused by air pollution. In Britain’s cities, air pollution is contributing to around 40,000 early deaths annually, taking more lives than road traffic accidents. The World Health Organisation (WHO) explains that breathing in tiny particles found in indoor and outdoor air pollution, (PM10, particles of 10 micrometers or more detrimental PM2.5, particles of 2.5 micrometers) can penetrate the lungs and may enter the bloodstream.

Dr Maria Neira, Director for Public Health and Environment at WHO, explains that "Air pollution is a major environmental health issue and it is vital that we increase efforts to reduce the health burden it creates, if we monitor and manage the environment properly we can significantly reduce the number of people suffering from respiratory and heart disease, and lung cancer." Their aim is to raise awareness of health risks caused by city air pollution, encouraging the implementation of effective policies and close monitoring of the situation in cities.

Only a few cities currently meet the WHO guideline values, most people living in cities have an average annual exposure to PM10 particles which exceed the WHO Air Quality guideline recommended maximum level of 20 micrograms per cubic metre (20µg/m3).

How can Pinacl help?

Measuring air quality is a major strategy in the fight against air pollution, Pinacl makes it easier to gather and monitor data through its Air Quality Sensors. Our  AQ sensors will measure against the Air Quality Index (AQI) which is an index for reporting daily air quality. It tells you how clean or polluted your air is, and any associated health effects that you could experience within a few hours of breathing in the polluted air.

Pinacl’s IoT AQ sensors will measure and report on temperature, humidity and pressure and primary air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and ozone. The AQ sensors allow environmental teams to collate measurements more easily and frequently than traditional manual processes. The readings are available in real-time, with all historical trend data accessible from an online portal. Collating this data through a portal enables integration of different AQ sensors to gather and analyse readings more widely for greater insight and measure.

The sensors can be deployed in a variety of areas: At construction sites the AQ sensors can help to protect employees, monitoring toxic and polluting gases, particularly monitoring PM10 and PM2.5 which are significant pollutants from construction sites. And in factory’s where employees are recognised as having been largely exposed to occupational illnesses, the sensors enable ideal working conditions to be sustained, helping to reduce health risks by monitoring and reporting on air quality, humidity and temperature in real-time and allowing immediate action to be taken when standards of safety are breached. In Smart cities,  improving air quality is becoming a key government priority, AQ data can be used to observe trends and take appropriate action such as issuing warnings to citizens, or optimising traffic lights during times of substantial commute and pollute to improve congestion.  Schools ca pre-plan indoor and outdoor activities based on predicted AQ conditions for certain times in the day.

 Benefits of IoT AQ sensors:

  • City Wide Coverage
  • Near Real time readings
  • Minimum maintenance
  • On-line portal for ease of access to Pollutant and AQI data
  • Trend Analysis
