How technology can save the retail industry

With constant mention of the ‘death of the high street’, Blis has released a report looking into the current state of the retail industry and how technology can help.

Over the past few months, the UK high street has been facing a lot of issues, with Debenhams entering administration, Arcadia agreeing to a Company Voluntary Agreement (CVA) and Boots shutting 200 stores.

The ‘Real Retail’ report explains how 53% of consumers prefer shopping in physical stores and would like to see more instore innovation.

With 63% of shoppers using their mobile whilst shopping, it is important for retailers to understand the needs of the customers and adapt to fit them. Sending personalised offers to customers could help boost sales as 27% of people say they walk out of stores if there is no sale.

Implementing store WiFi can enable retailers to enhance the customer experience, analysing shoppers’ behaviour such as the way they navigate the store, popular times and what will encourage them to stay longer.

33% of shoppers are willing to provide personal information at a store in return for vouchers. By having free WiFi, retailers can request information from the customers upon logging in and can send them personalised offers and vouchers. Business owners can then use the data they collect to focus their marketing approach such as marketing events and daily special offers.

Stores can also use their WiFi to spread adverts that can increase footfall, as location-based adverts are successful across all age categories. Mobile and desktop adverts are also effective, with 33% of people saying they have been influenced to make a purchase instore after being exposed to one.

By installing a reliable WiFi network in their store, businesses can then begin to introduce new technologies which are important to the customers such as an instore tablet (26%), digital try-on options (17%), visual AI (13%) and augmented reality (7%).
