Pinacl to deploy an ‘Open-Access’ LoRaWAN IoT network across York

LoRaWAN is a type of Low Powered Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technology intended to act as an Internet of Things network for low power wireless sensors covering a large geographical area.

York Minster

Pinacl were successfully awarded a Managed Service contract with City of York Council back in 2009. We have so far delivered a number of significant high-profile projects including; the relocation of over 1,500 Council staff to West Offices, replaced their legacy WAN with a superfast dark fibre network across the City and upgraded the corporate telephony solution in support of flexible working initiatives.

Previously, Pinacl had won a contract with the Council for a city-wide public wireless concession for a minimum of 5 years. The Public WiFi service covered key parts of the city centre from outside the station, through to the Minster and even down the Shambles as well as the six remote Park and Ride terminals.

A key part of the solution with City of York Council was the design, installation and operation of a Dark Fibre network. The dark fibre network provides a fully future proof networking environment for York, while delivering much-needed and much-improved high-speed network access to the City's 70 schools, 14 libraries, and Council offices, as well as supporting the City’s traffic management and CCTV systems. This solution has enabled the City of York to become one of the most technologically-advanced cities in the UK. York has now been voted the best place to live in the UK.  Seen as ‘the perfect mix of heritage and hi‑tech’, York, has the fastest internet in Britain and is the UK’s first “Gigabit City”.

Pinacl will be deploying an ‘Open-Access’ external LoRaWAN solution consisting of an initial four gateways across York. Gateways are to be located at strategic locations across the city to provide optimum coverage. Pinacl and City of York Council have a desire to drive innovation and encourage entrepreneurs from the local area, leveraging a living city wide LoRaWAN network covering large parts of the city.

“Given our commitment to help create a truly Smart City – built on York’s world-class infrastructure – Pinacl’s LoRaWAN offer immediately caught our eye as a hugely scalable yet relatively low-cost solution that can really deliver on the enormous potential of IoT. By generating city-scale intelligence across many of our key assets, it will enable us to realise significant efficiencies through early intervention and more targeted resourcing, in turn creating better outcomes for our customers.”
